Long Day's Journey into Night

Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville reprise their roles in Richard Eyre’s critically acclaimed production of Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Long Day’s Journey Into Night, after a sold-out run as part of Bristol Old Vic’s 250th Anniversary season.

Long Day’s Journey Into Night features a family of four: haunted by the past but unable to face the truth of the present. Caught in a cycle of love and resentment, the Tyrones and their two sons test the strength of family bonds as they indulge in their vices, unraveling the truth as day turns to night and the family’s lives fall to ruin.
Often called one of the most powerful American plays of the 20th century, O’Neill’s masterpiece finds a new home at Wyndham’s Theatre for a strictly limited run (10 weeks only) through 27 January 2018.

Massive treat to see that calibre of acting. Really lovely comfortable theatre and can’t believe how quick the time went for such a long play.

  • Very powerful

    19 February 2018

Very powerful. Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville turn in performances that are huddled in the very fabric of O'Neill's magnum opus. Beard and Keenan fizz along their own perilous paths, both sturdy supports for the fractious squabbling O'Neill wrote mainly as a study of his parents. This play is three hours long and yet it both feels like a brutally honest examination of the souls of each of the characters and a fleeting moment in time, a snapshot of unhappiness and the qualities of free will, destiny and failure. Couldn't clap enough at the end.

  • Long days Journey into Night

Magnificent production. Jeremys accent wavered a lot and in good seats his diction meant we lacked words. Lesley was truly outstanding. 2nd Act is very long and the roaring pace of Act 1 dropped.
