  • Music & Singing levels

    15 May 2018

The show was very nice but the music was very loud with respect to the singers’ voice, a lot of times music would cover up actual somging.

  • Completely surprised by how much I liked this!

    8 May 2018

Alright, here is a confession: I thought this was a jukebox musical and avoided it for a long time. I had my grandmother and mother visit, and needed a show that they would suit them with their somewhat limited English. Got us stalls row G tickets and what can I say - we had the best night out! The songs are seamlessly woven into the story, the cast is so energetic and costumes and choreography are super entertaining. It is a lighthearted and surprisingly funny (and sometimes quite saucy) show and I can honestly say I have been converted and will recommend it to anyone looking for a fun night at the theatre (very suitable for the parent/grandparent generation, less for children as themes are quite adult)!

  • At its heart it remains an irresistible show, full of punchy and hilariously choreographed production numbers (courtesy Anthony van Laast), that is full of heart. The show treads a fine line between cheeky cheesiness and sincerity, but the cast must provide the latter or the former collapses, too. As the mother and daughter at the centre of its story, Helen Hobson and Charlotte Wakefield anchor it with both. Hobson lends mother Donna a tough, gritty heart, nowhere more so than in the anguished feeling she brings to The Winner Takes It All. Wakefield, who made her West End debut on this same stage in Spring Awakening, is radiantly lovely as daughter Sophie, whose attempt to discover her father’s identity drives her to a bigger discovery of her own.

  • But what is it that makes the show so appealing? Well, quite apart from having some of the finest pop songs ever written, Mamma Mia! is the ultimate feel-good tale of love conquering all. It is completely uncynical and consistently compelling – it's the perfect show for someone who says they don't like theatre, or who "doesn't do musicals".
